So many divergent and diverse moments went into this design! In the big mixing bowl of the little grey cells, God tossed in many moments of watching eagles soar on the thermal lifts rising off the cliff behind our house; my mom’s favorite colors and her birthday wish; a question posed to my mom on their 42nd anniversary – “what bird do see yourselves as”; a Bible verse; an educational chat on air science with a friend; and about a dozen other little things.
Did you know that eagles mate for life? Well, on my parents’ anniversary, my mom declared that she and my dad were eagles. It’s a good thing she didn’t specify that it is bald eagles that mate for life… my dad who’s starting to shine on top probably would not have been amused.
When it came to naming this pattern, I admit I was stumped. All my ideas began with the letter “s” and as you all know that particular letter has had prominence in pattern names in the past, so my challenge was to pick a name that began with any of the other 25 letters in the alphabet! I took it to my designer friend who posed a curious question to me: “Were you inspired by anything other than the yarn colors and texture of the stitches for this cowl?” I was – a causal jeans wearing mom taking flight on the back of an eagle for a little weekend fun.
It was this dear friend who recalled to me a verse that I treasured when years ago I first saw the eagles soar.
Who would have thought combining the visual in Isaiah 40, with a jeans wearing mom, adding a touch of science, and a sprinkling of friendship would be the route to discovering the perfect name for a design inspired by family and life in the mountains!
