Brioche Step Shawl
Dip your knitting needles into brioche shaping with the Brioche Step Shawl. This fun extra-long crescent-shaped shawl is perfect for snuggling. Keep an eye out for three special features. There are no brioche purls! With the clever use of brioche knits and slip stitches, you’ll get the look of purls without any of the work. Despite the colorful results, this design is actually a single-colored brioche shawl – no slipping back for that contrasting color! Finally, don’t fear the crescent mustache – a secret design element eliminates it from the start! The tech edited and test knit easy level pattern is fully written. The pattern includes links for 4 video tutorials – brioche wrap and turn, brkfyof, kfyobyof, and a …
Stitch in Focus: kfyobyof
One of my favorite stitches is the kfyobyof – knit into the front, yarn over, back, yarn over, and front. This increases 1 stitch to 5 stitches. The video demonstrates both a standard kfyobyof as well as how to work it off of a k1E stitch as in Brioche Step Shawl. Jump to 1:02 to see how to work a k1E and how the kfyobyof is adapted when you are working off a k1E stitch. Though not technically a brioche stitch, I included a tutorial on the kfyobyof (knit into the front, yarn over, back, yarn over, and front) in Brioche Step Shawl because it’s the foundational growth stitch for this crescent shape shawl. The beginning of the video shows …
Stitch in Focus: brkfyof
Check out the brkfyof increase method, where a knit into the front, yarn over, and front is worked into a brioche knit stitch to increase the stitch count from 1 stitches to 3 stitches. This video demonstrates how to incorporate the stitches into brioche on the next row. Let muscle memory take over on this one, it happens rather naturally.
Stitch in Focus: Brioche Wrap and Turn
Work a wrap and turn on your brioche stitches! This fun technique combines short row knitting with single color brioche. If you might have guessed this year of KNIT (knitworthy ‘n intriguing techniques) features a lot of wraps and turns… I may have a secret addiction. Give it a try on brioche, and you might just discover why ;-)!
Grafting Tutorial
Grafting Stockinette and Reverse Stockinette on a #keepwncwarm project. The designer had several options for the bind off method, but this was by far my favorite. Some of you’ve asked that I make my Instagram reels available on YouTube. Since I wasn’t constrained by the 90 second limit, this tutorial includes a lot more information, like transition from one type of stitch to another. Happy knitting! Hurricane Helene Relief
Last week I wrote and invited you all to join in the #keepWNCwarm event with me. But I also wanted to do something from the designer end of things to say “thank you” to each one of you who decided to support the area I lived in for a quarter of a century! If you’ve donated, please use the code pray4westernnc on Ravelry or Payhip to download your choice of either Downtown Burnsville, Wednesday with Wendy, or Winter Chic. I picked each of these because they are all cold weather projects, but more than that – they all have a particular tie to my own home. Downtown Burnsville – Burnsville, NC was home to “my” LYS… on the long drive …
Keep Western NC Warm
Calling all crafters! Check out this donation call from Jessica (snickerdoodleknits) and Hearts on Fiber yarn shop. To help warm up those impacted by Hurricane Helene, they’ve arranged the NC located Hearts of Fire LYS to be a donation location for your warmup knit donations! For those of you who’ve donated time and / or money – thank you! If you who are still looking for a way to get involved or involved more, perhaps this is what you’ve been looking for? https://www.snickerdoodleknits.com/keepwncwarm Some additional tips – several designers are offering a discount on patterns or complimentary patterns for charity (only) knitting purposes. I’ve started an IG story highlight and will post up as I find them. Feel free to …
Excel to the Rescue
I freely admit this is not where I wanted to be at this point of the year with this design, but it’s where I find myself. A lot of my work happens in the “little grey cells” sorting out things before I ever approach the computer or knitting needles. And well, they can be temperamental. So after Turning Points came out and I had a week off, I opened up the Meanwhile in Maine design ready to dive into the schematics and get it off to TE. Then it happened… on the first line block of schematic numbers. Wait, that’s not right?!? How do I have 2” and 4” positive ease on the last 2 sizes????? What WAS I thinking …
