Silvia of ELF Release 3 in Technicolor Movie Night
Christine Guest is the most creative pattern engineer I’ve come across. She dedicates swatch after swatch to engineering new techniques and refining old ones. Whenever I have a sticky situation in a pattern, I know she’ll have a solution I’ve not thought of! So it is with great excitement that I introduce Silvia of ELF, the third release in the Technicolor: Movie Night collection, to you today. If you have Technicolor: Matinee, you’ll have the pattern Silvia Needs a Bag. But just what could Silvia need a bag for? Buttons galore! Because she is so humble, you won’t hear the depths of her involvement from her, but I loved her process of creation for this collection. Not only did Christine …

The wait is over, the sequel to Technicolor: Matinee is now available… introducing Technicolor: Movie Night! This 4-designer collection spins the plotline of what happens when you give a handful of designers the exact same stitches with the theme of movies. How does each one interpret the prompt? How does something so simple of a stitch pattern (or two) take on so many different storylines? Debuting first is Carol Herman of Knit Equals Joy Hollywood and Vine. This “snuggle up with popcorn and your sweetie sized shawl” featuring exquisite lace and beautiful cables. Check out a closeup for my favorite feature …
Body, Collar, and a Roof!
Exciting developments are afoot on both Meanwhile in Maine projects! First up, the fiber: (insert trumpet sound) The mental block broke!!! I’ve been knitting like crazy and am already finished the body, first stab at the collar (it’ll need just a touch of tweaking), and last night I started the first sleeve. Check out Antionette’s live replay for a sneak peek. Since she surprised me by putting me on camera yesterday (without any warning, mind you), I thought I’d share the WIP I had to work on during her live. https://www.youtube.com/live/iG1SmDIDTpw?feature=share (to skip to the preview, click here: https://www.youtube.com/live/iG1SmDIDTpw?feature=share&t=2044 ) As you can see in the video, I did add a little cable detail to the front, which originally was …
Tulle Collar
Mentor and designer, Jill Wolcott, delivers the final design to the Technicolor: Matinee collection. If you are looking for a cozy design, check out her Tulle Collar! This double thick knit features textured stitches and gorgeous buttons. If you read Jill’s essay in the eBook, you’ll find a few names for this design. Never fear, check her blog for the story behind the story’s story! 1. Which came first, the movie or the designDefinitely the movie came first. 2. Is your design something to knit while watching a movieYou can knit most of this while watching a movie. Like all of my designs, there are moments of needing to pay attention, and lots of good viewing knitting. 3. Any sneak …
Holyrood Hooded Scarf
Sue McCain dives deep into the cold weather knitting season with her contribution to the Technicolor: Matinee collection. Featuring strong yet beautiful geometrics, Holyrood Hooded Scarf, invites you to escape to the Scottish countryside through your stitches! I can’t decide what I love more – the gorgeous hoodie or the perfectly simple scarf? 1. Which came first, the movie or the design? Honestly, as soon as I chose the movie (which took about 10 seconds), the design came flying right behind. So much of Outland for me is about the scenery, buildings, and clothing. I’ve been to some of the places they used for movie locations, and I’ve seen the incredible beauty of the Scottish countryside. As a rider, I’ve …
Calla Lily Wrap
The next release in the Technicolor: Matinee eBook is Calla Lily Wrap by Carol Herman (aka Knit Equals Joy). I love Carol’s blending of highly textured sections with easy sections. Curiously enough we both picked the same pattern from the 4 to use and were both inspired by Katherine Hepburn! 1. Which came first, the movie or the design? The design came first, based on the stitches our group of designers selected. My original hope had been to come up with a colorwork design, but our choice of stitches ruled that out. Once the design became concrete, it led me to think of Bringing Up Baby and other madcap romance/comedies of the 1930’s and ‘40’s. 2. Is your design something …
Steam Heat
The next release in Technicolor: Matinee is Steam Heat by Laura Patterson. We may have totally different design processes, but one thing we do both love is jazz in movies… especially when sung by power-house singers! More about how this relates to Laura’s design in the essay section of Technicolor: Matinee ;-). 1. Which came first, the movie or the design The movie. Actually, a set of movies came first. Starting with old black and white movies, and progressing to pictures that are much more current. Parts of each of these movies shared a feeling, a theme as it were, in a certain kind of scene. 2. Did the movie play a role in your yarn or yarn color …
Silvia Needs a Bag
The next release in the Technicolor: Matinee eBook collection is Silvia Needs a Bag by pattern engineer, Christine Guest. Christine’s designs fascinate me! She incorporates such incredible detail scientifically proven to work together in beautiful artistry. I’ve had a few peeks into her process and her pile of swatches to get everything perfect is mesmerizing! I’m also privileged to be test knitting an upcoming release of hers, a men’s sweater, and am loving her attention to detail. The care she takes to make sure patterning develops in a beautiful method even when doing something like increasing for a sleeve – wow! But you’ll hear more on that a little bit later. For now, Christine was kind enough to let me …
